I have experience with AQA, Edexcel and OCR A Level Biology. I’ve worked with students at different starting points and helped them towards their goals, from getting into medical schools in the UK to turning things around after disappointing mock results.

I look for the most effective next step based on how the student learns and what they need at that moment. Sometimes that means exam technique; sometimes it means spending time memorising material. The balance changes as understanding develops and exams approach.

Understanding Difficult Biology

I explain complex aspects of biology first in basic terms. Once students can visualise the ideas, we build in the terminology they’ll need to use accurately in their Year 13 exams.

In some lessons, this takes the form of inquiry-based learning: the student is actively involved rather than receiving a lecture. I ask questions and probe their reasoning to find subtleties in their understanding. We identify the point where something has become unclear, then work on it until it provides a secure foundation.

The aim is to make the explanation useful to that student. A correct answer can be a starting point for a conversation about why it is correct, rather than a reason to move straight on.

Making Revision More Effective

Students often make progress in their independent revision too. I help them avoid spending time on activities that feel like revision but do little to strengthen understanding or recall, such as watching videos without checking what they can explain afterwards.

A Level Biology is information-dense. A student might spend two hours struggling with a complex subtopic such as the light-dependent stage of photosynthesis, when the first useful step is learning key terms or revisiting the background knowledge they have missed.

There is a logical order: start with the foundations, then build on them. Taking a few steps back can be more productive than repeatedly trying to understand an explanation that assumes knowledge is already secure.

Exam Technique and Essay Practice

We spend as much time as needed on exam technique, particularly towards the end of Year 13. Alongside past papers, I use custom-written questions and mark schemes, as well as resources from respected publishers that work directly with the exam boards.

Where the course includes essay questions, I use a structured process. The student writes an answer, then we meet for a short, focused discussion about it. They go away and try another, applying the feedback to the next piece of work.

Repeating this over several weeks allows us to make specific improvements each time and work towards the higher mark bands.

Adam, founder of Discover Tutoring

I’m Adam, founder of Discover Tutoring. I’ve taught students one-to-one since 2020, helping them work through difficult ideas and develop more independent ways of learning.

My background in environmental science and marine biology gives me a strong interest in living systems, from the processes within organisms to their relationships with the wider environment.

At A Level, I particularly enjoy the discussion that develops when a student starts to question an explanation or connect it with another part of the course. We can explore what a piece of evidence supports, where a model has limits and how to express an idea precisely. Those conversations help me judge when to offer another explanation and when to give the student more room to work things out.
