A Level Biology Tuition

Experienced Tutors for All Exam Boards

Our tutors have experience with AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards for A Level Biology. We’ve worked with all levels and helped students to achieve their goals from getting into Top Tier Medical Schools in the UK to turning things around with students who’re failing their mocks. We actively find the most efficient path based on the way the student learns and what they need at this moment in time. Sometimes that means exam technique and sometimes it’s heads down memorising material. We will explain the most complex aspects of biology, first in basic terms that anyone could understand and then once students can visualise the basics, we build in the necessary terminology they’ll need to use to the get the marks on the end of Y13 exams.

Our approach in some instances is called Inquiry Based Learning, this is where the student is deeply involved in the session and are not receiving a lecture. There is very little productivity in students being spoken to, they need to be engaged and we need them to be engaged. We continuously question and probe to find subtleties in their understanding, we then find the root cause and cover that specifically until it becomes a new foundation. Our students often make significant progress in their own revision as well, because we help them to avoid wasting time procrastinating, to avoid wasting time on inefficient “fake revision” like mindless video watching and to target the low hanging fruit. The biology course is very information dense and often students could waste 2 hours struggling to understand a complex subtopic like the light dependent stage of photosynthesis, where they could have been memorising key terms that they’d missed in the first place. There is a logical order, start at the beginning, not halfway through. Typically, students have not caught up with the background and then they’re hopelessly scrambling to understand when they should just take a few steps back.

We spend however much time is needed on exam technique, especially towards the end of Y13. Along with the available bank of past papers, we also have custom written questions and mark schemes, in addition to other resources from respected publishers that work directly with the exam boards for maximum relevance. Essay questions for some exam boards can be challenging and we’ve got a standardised approach where we ask a student to write an answer, then we meet regularly to have short focussed conversations about the essays, each time they go away and try another, making incremental progress over the course of a few weeks until they’re hitting those top tiers.
